{"id":46,"date":"2026-06-05T07:29:33","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T07:29:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.twinfall.polimi.it\/?page_id=46"},"modified":"2026-06-26T11:46:12","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T11:46:12","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.twinfall.polimi.it\/?page_id=46","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laboratories involved in the project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GAP2Lab &#8211; Applied Geology &amp; Applied Geophysics Laboratory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polo-lecco.polimi.it\/en\/ricerca\/research-laboratories\/building-engineering-and-building-refurbishment\/gap2-lab-applied-geology-and-geophysics\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.polo-lecco.polimi.it\/en\/ricerca\/research-laboratories\/building-engineering-and-building-refurbishment\/gap2-lab-applied-geology-and-geophysics\">GAP2 Lab<\/a><\/strong> carries out research activities mainly focused on forecasting, prevention, mitigation and management of risk associated with hydrogeological hazards and underground cavities and tunnels. By combining geological and geophysical expertise, lab activities cope with a wide spectrum of applications related to environmental and civil engineering, as well as to civil protection. Laboratory equipment includes: acquisition systems for near-surface seismic survey, commercial packages and proprietary software to process seismic signals, equipment and software for GPR surveys, numerical modelling software addressing the behavior of unstable slopes along with a series of standard tools for rock and terrain mechanical testing. Thanks to previous funding from Fondazione Cariplo (SMART-SED), the laboratory has developed a section devoted to RFID technology, used for debris flow and sediment transport monitoring. Besides GAP2Lab, the PoliGEO group is supported also by facilities in Milano Campus where the Applied Geology Laboratory in Leonardo (Milano) is equipped with several devices (an infiltrometer, two multiparametric probes and several phreatimeters).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MOX &#8211; Modelling and Scientific Computing Laboratory<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/mox.polimi.it\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mox.polimi.it\/\"><strong>MOX Laboratory<\/strong><\/a> is located in the Leonardo Campus and is part of the Department of Mathematics (DMAT). It was established in 2002 by Alfio Quarteroni and has evolved into one of the leading Italian institutions in applied mathematics and advanced methods for scientific computing.<br>DMAT has at its disposal a high-performance cluster with 40 nodes, each equipped with 2 AMD EPYC 7413 24-core processors, and 1 GPU node. The project&#8217;s researchers will have access to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LabMGF &#8211; Laboratory of Geodetic and Photogrammetric Measurements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/labmgf.dica.polimi.it\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/labmgf.dica.polimi.it\/\">Laboratory of Geodetic and Photogrammetric Measurements<\/a> focuses on developing geodetic and photogrammetric techniques for civil and environmental applications (PoliRS). Three-dimensional modelling and mapping, as well as processing and sharing of geospatial data with GIS platforms are investigated. Several types of tools are available, such as high-accurate multi-stations and geodetic GNSS receivers, combined with terrestrial laser scanners, UAVs and cameras. The usability of low-cost devices for large-scale applications is also explored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UNIMORE &#8211; University of Modena and Reggio Emilia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unimore.it\/it\">University of Modena and Reggio Emilia<\/a> is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It was founded in 1998 by merging the university campuses of Modena (established in AD 1175) and Reggio Emilia (established in AD 1188), and today it has over 26,000 students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National Research Council &#8211; Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imati.cnr.it\/make_home_page.php?status=start\">CNR-IMATI<\/a><\/strong> is the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Information Technologies (IMATI), belonging to the National Research Council (CNR), Italy. It has three branches, located in Pavia (headquarters), Milano, and Genova. IMATI is a center of excellence in numerical analysis for partial differential equations, computational topology, geometry processing, and statistical analysis. IMATI has a long-standing experience of international cooperation with both research and industrial consortia. Regarding computing facilities, CNR-IMATI is equipped with four heavy-duty workstations and has access to a computing cluster shared with the University of Pavia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research Team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers of\u00a0<strong>PoliMi\u00a0<\/strong>involved in TWINFALL are staff of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA) and of the Department of Mathematics (DMAT). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<strong>PoliGEO\u00a0<\/strong>team is formed
