TWINFALL in the spotlight: local media highlights our mission
The launch of the TWINFALL project has received coverage across major local news outlets! Recently, Lecco Notizie, Il Giorno, Lecco Today, and La Provincia dedicated articles to our initiative, highlighting our commitment to combating hydrogeological instability in the Lecco province.
As the articles rightly point out, Italy faces a critical challenge, with 94% of its municipalities at risk of landslides, floods, and coastal erosion. In response to the growing impact of climate change, the Polo territoriale di Lecco (Politecnico di Milano) has launched our project TWINFALL, a cutting-edge research project funded by Fondazione Cariplo under the “Territori Sicuri” call.
The local press emphasized several core pillars of our project:
- Advanced Digital Twins: The technological heart of TWINFALL is the creation of dynamic, detailed virtual replicas of mountain slopes, allowing us to simulate evolutionary scenarios and support authorities in emergency planning.
- Targeted Interventions: We are focusing on some of the most vulnerable points in the province, including the Torrioni di Rialba in Abbadia Lariana, Monte San Martino in Lecco, the slopes above the road to Piani dei Resinelli in Ballabio, and the Meria stream basin in Mandello del Lario.
- Innovative Technologies: Our monitoring system integrates Arduino-based meteorological and hydraulic stations, optical and multispectral PhotoMonitoring, thermal surveys via drones, and seismic noise analysis.
- Citizen Science: The media highlighted our participatory approach, which will allow citizens and technicians to become “sentinels of the territory” by sending geolocated images through a dedicated mobile app.
As our Scientific Director, Prof. Laura Longoni, explained to the press, TWINFALL represents a paradigm shift in risk management by building a digital ecosystem that unites scientific research, local authorities, and citizens.
